Alpha Tec releases a new version of the NAC-PAC™ EA3

Alpha Tec is dedicated to improving the clinical microbiology laboratory by optimizing the pre-analytical specimen preparation process. This is an often overlooked aspect of the diagnostic process that can have a meaningful impact on the final result. The specimen preparation that occurs prior to mycobacteria diagnostic procedures is inherently complex, and, if performed incorrectly, it can lead to a reduction in diagnostic effectiveness. Alpha Tec’s specimen preparation reagents overcome the inherent limitations of conventional technology and can create real improvements in the speed and accuracy of the final result. The NAC-PAC™ EA3 is a unique product designed to further improve specimen preparation by bringing together all the reagents necessary in an easy to use format that fosters systematic processing technique.

When Alpha Tec released the NAC-PAC™ EA3, it included NAC-PAC™ Red 3.0%, NPC-67™ Neutralization Buffer, and Pellet Resuspension Buffer. This combination of reagents typically provides the best balance between improved mycobacteria recovery and minimization of breakthrough contamination for the majority of laboratories. While the NAC-PAC™ EA3 has been embraced by a great many laboratories, some facilities with minimal specimen transport times and well controlled contamination levels have expressed concerns that a decontamination solution using 3.0% NaOH might be too aggressive.

Since we are committed to the idea of allowing each laboratory to fine tune their pre-analytical processes, we have decided to release an additional format of the NAC-PAC™ EA3 with a less aggressive decontamination solution. The new NAC-PAC™ EA3 will be product number 048-17, and will feature the same combination of specimen preparation reagents in the same unique format, but will come with 2.5% NAC-PAC™ Red decontamination solution. This lower concentration of NaOH will allow laboratories with low levels of breakthrough contamination to utilize the diagnostic advantages provided by the NAC-PAC™ EA3 format without concerns over the strength of the decontamination solution it contains.
